He was influenced by drummers such as Keith Moon, Cozy Powell, Buddy Rich, Ian Paice and John Bonham. It was one of his influences, Buddy Rich a long time family friend, who gave Bam Bamm the advice and even drum lessons that help him become the adept and skillful drummer he is today. Paul O’Neal, who produced Dancer’s "Its Against The Law", once referred to Shibley as "one of the most inventive drummers I've ever worked with". He isn't satisfied with simply adding a beat; his drum parts are an integral part of the orchestration of the record. He's also a great live drummer who is lots of fun to watch, with a presence and energy level that are mesmerizing" His first experience playing in front of large audiences, came with the help of Buddy Rich who in 1976 help get Shibley an appearance on "The Gong Show". He would attempt to do a drum solo in 45 seconds without being stopped. His solo was complete with 2 electronic, 6-foot tall toy solders that were programmed to interact with Shibley through out his solo. Shibley's solo earned him a standing ovation from the audiences and a score of 30 points (the highest possible score) from the judges. This was good enough for him to win first place, winning $712.05 and a "Golden Gong" trophy
