2000-2009 Direct-to-Video Specials (A Charming Birthday to Twinkle Wish Adventure)
2010 television series (Friendship is Magic)
Major Characters
- Twilight Sparkle
- Voiced by: Tara Strong
- Singing Voice: Rebecca Shoichet
- A unicorn pony with a light violet body and an indigo mane and tail with pink and purple streaks and the primary protagonist of the series. Originally based on the unicorn pony named Twilight from Rescue from Midnight Castle in the original series but the colors are almost the same as the G3 earth pony named Twilight Twinkle except for the mane and tail. Priding herself on being Princess Celestia's dearest pupil, she once considered knowledge more important than friendship. When the danger of the Mare in the Moon loomed, Princess Celestia sent her to Ponyville to learn the importance of friendship, which proved invaluable in her confrontation with Nightmare Moon. She decides to stay in Ponyville and study friendship with her mentor's blessings. Moreover, she is brilliant and often analytical, and has very powerful magic. She also sometimes appears to have an insecure side in some of the episodes when it comes to fitting in. Her spirit represents magic.
- Applejack
- Voiced by: Ashleigh Ball
- An earth pony with an orange body and blonde mane and tail. Originally, she was featured in Rescue from Midnight Castle and has almost the same appearance she had in the original episode, but with fewer apples in her cutie mark. She is very dependable and down-to-earth, but also stubborn and a bit selfish. She wears a cowboy hat and comes from a large family of apple-name related members, spread all over Equestria, who oversee apple orchards and run a group of apple businesses. Her spirit represents honesty.
- Rainbow Dash
- Voiced by: Ashleigh Ball
- A pegasus pony with a sky blue body and a multicolored mane and tail, highly similar to 2002-2010 Rainbow Dash (earth pony), but with a very different nature similar to Firefly, an adventurous pegasus pony from "Rescue from Midnight Castle (1984)" (along with Applejack). She is very brave and bold, but also mischievous and proud, as well as sometimes being insensitive. She has great speed and, with the help of the other pegasus ponies, has the job of clearing clouds out of the sky and otherwise changing the weather. In addition, she dreams of one day to become a member of the Wonderbolts, Equestria's aerial flight team. Her spirit represents loyalty.
- Pinkie Pie
- Voiced by: Andrea Libman
- Singing Voice: Shannon Chan-Kent
- An earth pony with a pink body and magenta mane and tail. She is one of the 8 original 2003 Ponies (called G3) and one of the core 7 friends as leader in G3.5. She maintains most of her appearance, but with her mane & tail color (usually, her body used to be pink, and her mane & tail a lighter shade) and cutie mark (originally 3 balloons with curved strings) changed; her new cutie mark matches Surprise's, a pegasus pony, but it's blue and yellow instead of green. Her real name is Pinkamena Diane Pie and she remains as a party planner, but is very funny, talkative, a bit air-headed, and quite random at times. She also enjoys singing and playing pranks (but to her, practical jokes on Fluttershy are off-limits due to her sensitivity). Plus, there is seldom a day without her smile. Her ability involves predicting the future with her body twitches and has a split personality, on which her mane straightens to the way it was during her unhappy days on the rock farm, before she obtained her cutie mark. Her spirit represents laughter.
- Fluttershy
- Voiced by: Andrea Libman
- A pegasus pony with a yellow body and a pink mane and tail. She has a similar appearance and nature to Posey, an earth pony in the 1980's show, and Sky Skimmer, a Generation 2 Pony. She is named after an earth pony in the G3 line. She is sweet and calm, but is timid and often very shy around others, though she can be forceful when pushed. Despite this demeanor, she has a great love and care for animals and is willing to help them at any cost. It is revealed in the fifth episode that she is a year older than Pinkie Pie and has a special ability known as "The Stare", shown in Episode 17, which lets her intimidate even the fiercest animals into doing what she wants them to do. Also in Episode 14, Fluttershy also has good knowledge in sewing just like Rarity. Her spirit represents kindness.
- Rarity
- Voiced by: Tabitha St. Germain
- A unicorn pony with a white body and a royal purple mane and tail. She has the appearance of Glory, the unicorn who made a short appearance in Rescue from Midnight Castle and is named after her prior namesake character from . Her cutie mark matches that of Sparkler, another pony that made her appearance in , but with fewer diamonds. She is very stylish and beautiful, as she is interested in fashion and often desires to be a center of attention. She considers herself a lady and often acts sophisticated. She can also be very dramatic, often when a disaster occurs to her. She's Sweetie Belle's older sister and dreams of becoming a designer for Princess Celestia and marrying Celestia's nephew. Her spirit represents generosity.
- Spike
- Voiced by: Cathy Weseluck
- A purple and green baby dragon who is Twilight Sparkle's assistant and roomate. He is much closer in appearance to his original design from the Rescue from Midnight Castle movie and the My Little Pony series of the 1980s than to the redesign in the direct-to-video episodes of the 2000s. Spike serves as the only means to contact Celestia and he is very sarcastic and laughs at others' misfortune. However, he is very supportive towards Twilight and also helpful at others. In some of the episodes, it is shown that Spike has a major crush on Rarity.
Minor Characters
- Princess Celestia
- Voiced by: Nicole Oliver
- The ruler of Equestria and the elder sister of Princess Luna. She created Equestria with her sister and controls the sun. She is a pegasus unicorn with a very pale lavender body and multi-colored mane and tail. She wears a gold tiara, collar and horse shoes. 1000 years ago, she sealed Nightmare Moon in the moon with The Elements of Harmony. She is Twilight Sparkle's teacher and gave her the task to "make friends" in Ponyville upon learning of Nightmare Moon's return. However, after her sister is restored to her true form, she forgives her and allows Twilight Sparkle to remain in Ponyville with a new task of "studying the magic of friendship". She always refers to Twilight Sparkle as "My Faithful Student"
- Princess Luna/ Nightmare Moon
- Voiced by: Tabitha St. Germain
- She is the younger sister of Celestia who helped her in creating the world of Equestria, a pegasus unicorn pony with a indigo body and a teal mane and tail. Due to the different interaction between night and day by the ponies of Equestria, her growing jealousy transformed her into a shadowy figure named Nightmare Moon. In her new form, her body is black in blue armor with her mane and tail appearing to be made entirely out of sparkly indigo, purple-rimmed moondust that she can use as limbs. Her older sister was forced to seal her in the moon after an attempt to bring eternal night to the world. In the present day, she returned during the "longest day in Equestria" to achieve her goal once more while using her powers to hinder Twilight Sparkle and the other ponies from finding the Elements of Harmony. However, she is returned to her original form with the Elements of Harmony and resumes her place by Celestia's side.
The Cutie Mark Crusaders
The Cutie Mark Crusaders are a trio of fillies who have yet to earn their Cutie Marks. They frequently go on adventures to try to discover their special talents. They are:
- Apple Bloom
- Applejack's younger sister, Apple Bloom is a yellow baby pony with light red hair and a large pink bow yet has no cutie mark as she is still a baby pony and has yet to find her place in life. This began to trouble her as the rest of her class got theirs and she felt like an outcast until she meets two other '"blank" ponies whom she befriends. Notably, when she's talking to someone that she doesn't like or is trying to prove herself to, her accent fades. Together with Scootaloo and Sweetie Belle, she formed the Cutie Mark Crusaders so they can find their place in the world. Apple Bloom also knows Martial Arts and it is also revealed that she is skilled in practical design and using tools.
- Scootaloo
- One of Apple Bloom's friends, Scootaloo is an orange baby Pegasus pony with a pink mane and tail. She is originally based on her Generation 3 counterpart except with a different mane and tail color, added wings and the lack of cutie mark. Like Apple Bloom and Sweetie Belle, she doesn't have a cutie mark either and is a member of the Cutie Mark Crusaders. She is bold and brash, a tomboy of epic proportions and is not afraid to speak her mind and always ready for a fight. Although she can't fly, Scootaloo can use her tiny wings to give her extra propulsion when driving a scooter and help her perform amazing stunts. Her special talent is activities that require agility, though she's completely unaware of it.
- Sweetie Belle
- Rarity's younger sister, Sweetie Belle is a white baby unicorn pony with a pink and purple mane and tail. She is originally based on her Generation 3 counterpart except with a different mane and tail color and the lack of cutie mark. Like Apple Bloom and Scootaloo, she doesn't have a cutie mark either and is a member of the Cutie Mark Crusaders. Though a bit slow on things, she is as excitable as her friends. She is also a great singer, though she prefers not to sing in public.

They are the only known couple in the friendship is magic series. Their cutie marks each have three cupcakes. | unknown
Gilda | Gilda is a griffon and an old friend of Rainbow Dash since their days on the Junior Speedsters flight team. She is mean, rude, and bullies the other ponies in Ponyville, causing Fluttershy to cry. After seeing Gilda's behavior towards her other friends, Rainbow Dash realizes that Gilda is not a good friend and breaks off their friendship. | Maryke Hendrikse
Trixie | Trixie (who refers to herself in third person as "The Great and Powerful Trixie") is a Unicorn pony working as a traveling magician. She visits Ponyville with her show, in which she greatly exaggerates her magical abilities through the use of fireworks among other things and falsely claims to have defeated an Ursa Major. Shortly thereafter, Trixie was unable to defeat an Ursa Minor, the infant offspring of the Ursa Major, which attacked Ponyville after being startled out of its nap. She then admitted her ruses, and that she deceived in order to make herself look better in front of others. Her cutie mark is a magic wand with a star. | Kathleen Barr
Snips | Snips is a Unicorn Pony and Snail's companion. He is an excitable and goofy pony, who jumps eagerly at the slightest inclination. He is unusually short and round, and may be one of the smallest in Ponyville. He is characterized by small black eyes, bucked teeth, dark eyebrows, and a high and scratchy voice. These features grant him a unique appearance relative to the other residents of Ponyville. In Boast Busters, his first appearance, he displayed an infatuation with Trixie, a braggart magician. His cutie mark is a pair of scissors. | Lee Tockar
Snails | Snails is a unicorn pony who is often seen in the company of his friend Snips. He is slow in nature and mind and admires the bragging magician Trixie along with Snips. His cutie mark is a snail. | Richard Ian Cox
Zecora | A zebra who lives in the middle of the Everfree Forest, in a hut with natural herbs, a cauldron, and various masks from her homeland. The ponies in Ponyville had never seen a unique creature as her, and so they would lock up their doors whenever she comes to visit. Although she was first thought to be an evil enchantress who could inflict curses, she is revealed to be very friendly and an expert herbalist. She is known for always talking in rhyme and speaks with an African accent. Her cutie mark is a spiral sun. | unknown
Diamond Tiara | A stuck-up baby pony who is in the same class as Apple Bloom, Sweetie Belle, and Scootaloo. She and her best friend, Silver Spoon, make fun of ponies that don't have cutie marks. Like her name, her cutie mark is a tiara. | Chantal Strand

Twist | Twist is the smart and nerdy baby earth pony in Apple Bloom's class. She is white with curly red hair and wears large glasses. Her cutie mark is three flowers with smiley faces. | Emilie-Claire Barlow
Hoity-Toity | Hoity-Toity is a major representative of the fashion world from Canterlot, who arrived in Ponyville to see Rarity's fashion show. Having seen her "perfect" dresses, he then gave her a brutally honest review, saying how terrible they were. This almost ended the unicorn's career, until her friends brought him back to give Rarity another chance. He was impressed over a different set of Rarity's ensembles, ones that she threw away when her friends were unsatisfied. Hoity-Toity soon recommended her clothes to be featured in his fashion boutique in Canterlot. His cutie mark is a Paper fan. He bears visual similarity to fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld, who carries a paper fan. | Peter New
Sapphire Shores | Sapphire Shores is an earth pony and a famous popstar in Canterlot. She is based on her G3 counterpart except for her coat color. Sapphire speaks with a loud and theatrical voice, and frequently inserts musical intonations into her sentences. She appears to be a parody of the self-promoting star who is always "on." Despite her fame and over-the-top mannerisms, she seems to be quite friendly and approachable toward Rarity: she visits Rarity's shop personally and asks to be called by her first name, which absolutely thrills Rarity. | unknown
Photo Finish | Photo Finish is an earth pony and a famous fashion photographer in Equestria. She is quite posh, stuck up, and dismissive of ponies she deems unworthy of her time. She travels with an entourage of servile ponies who never speak and who cater to her every whim, doing things like carrying her around and vanishing the moment she tells them to leave. She is a shameless self-promotor, always referring to herself as "I, Photo Finish." She speaks in a pseudo-German accent. Her cutie mark is similar to Twilight Sparkle's. | unknown
Little Strongheart | Little Strongheart is a young female buffalo and part of the buffalo herd living in Appleloosa. She's very athletic and sometimes can calm down Chief Thunderhooves when he's angry. She is first seen with the buffalo herd when they hijacked a train cart which contains Applejack's tree and Spike. Little Strongheart is seen again at the buffalo's village. She feeds Spike turquoise, then apologizes to Dash for her actions during the heist, justifying the tree-kidnapping as an attempt to reclaim her herd's stampeding grounds that were lost to the Appleloosans' orchard. Her meeting with Braeburn is very conciliatory, yet Applejack and Rainbow Dash start an argument before any agreement can be reached. After a fight between the townsfolk and the buffalo, an agreement is finally reached, and the herd stampedes away, with Little Stongheart bidding her new friends goodbye. | unknown
Chief Thunderhooves | Chief Thunderhooves is the leader of the buffalo herd in Appleloosa. He seems to be rather long-winded, judging by how many fathers he listed, and is very traditional. He is also very determined and strong, with a fierce sense of honor. He has a powerful temper and is seen losing control of himself several times, still he warned the Appleloosans of his intentions before leading his tribe to fight them and was at least willing to negotiate. | Scott McNeil
Spitfire | Spitfire is an Pegasus Pony and the known leader of The Wonderbolts, Equestria's prestige flight team. She acknowledged Rainbow Dash during the Best Young Flyer's Competition for saving her and three more members after Rarity knocked her out.
