Katanga Mining is a mining company in the Katanga Province of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), majority-owned by Swiss commodity trader Glencore. It produces copper and cobalt at a single location, and according to Katanga its mine has "the potential to become Africa's largest copper producer and the world's largest cobalt producer."
In January 2008 Katanga acquired Nikanor PLC for $452m; its adjacent concessions had previously been part of the same mine complex. "Katanga holds a 75% stake in two joint ventures with Gécamines, a state-owned mining company in the DRC."
