Ali Habib Mahmud (Arabic: علي حبيب محمود) is the current defense minister of the Syrian Arab Republic, serving since June 2009.
Early life, education and career
He was born 1939 in Tartus and joined the army in 1959. In 1962 he graduated from the military academy. In 1994 he was appointed commander of the Special Forces until he was appointed deputy chief of staff in 2002. In 2004 he was appointed chief of General Staff of the Army and the armed forces.
