Ahmad Balal

Ahmad Balal, (born 26 February 1958, Lahore, Pakistan) is a Pakistani administrator, diplomat and artist, presently serving as Pakistan's Consul General in Hong Kong.

Balal belongs to the Malook caste, of lower-middle class origins. His family are Mohajirs (Immigrants) to Pakistan from Amritsar, Punjab (now in India) in 1947, his ancestors having originally migrated there from Kashmir, where they worked as menial labourers. His father rose to be a school and college teacher and educated his sons, including Dr Balal. In due course the son managed to obtain an MBBS degree from the King Edward Medical College in Lahore, qualifying as a medical practitioner . After a few years' practice, he joined the UNHCR, in Pakistan, as a junior employee, and then, sat for and passed the qualifying examination for Pakistan's elite Civil Service (also refered to as the Central Superior Services of Pakistan) in 1987. In the early part of his career as an officer of the District Management Group, he served as a magistrate, Assistant Commissioner and later Deputy Secretary in various postings within the country . In 2008-2009, he was selected to go as Pakistan's Consul-General at Hong Kong, where he is still presently posted. He has done much to improve Pakistan's image in Hong Kong and mainland China, and he has also actively promoted and defended the rights of Pakistani and Muslim students in universities and colleges in Hong Kong .

In addition to his administrative and diplomatic skills and career, Balal is also a keen painter and has held several exhibitions of his work in some of Pakistan's best art galleries. He is a keen follower of the sport of cricket and has done much to promote it in Hong Kong, too .

Balal is married, with two daughters and one son..
